Roundup History

The Early Days – 1966

The population of Las Vegas in 1966 was approximately 100,000 and the Aladdin Hotel and Caesars Palace had both just opened for business. Howard Hughes, the eccentric hero of the American aviation industry, was staying at the Desert Inn. In 1966, intrepid Chicago Sun-Times reporter Sandy Smith broke a national story about how the Chicago mob controlled and skimmed millions of dollars a year from Las Vegas casinos. The cash was lugged out in bags and suitcases and personally delivered to the Tony Sopranos of the day in Chicago, Miami, Cleveland and New York.

This is the setting for the first Las Vegas Roundup. The District One Archives Website (currently unavailable) listed a total A.A. membership for the state of Nevada at 880. It also mentions a contribution of $100 to A.A. from the "1st So. Nevada Round-Up".
